Awesome Reasons to Cloth Diaper
I am often asked why I cloth diaper. Why not?? There are so many awesome reasons to cloth diaper like, saving thousands of dollars, fewer rashes, less blowouts, less waste in landfills, baby exposed to fewer chemicals and they are adorable!
If you use disposables you will spend on average at least $800 a year on diapers (that is a low estimate and assuming you buy very inexpensive diapers in bulk). Most children potty train by 3 so you are looking at a minimum of $2400 for disposables. With cloth you can spend as little or as much as you want. Flats and prefolds are very inexpensive. You could get a stash together for less than $150 that you use all the way through potty training. I chose to go with AIO diapers that are more expensive but extremely easy to use (and I still saved a TON of money).
Natural fibers in many cloth diapers promotes better air flow which helps prevent rashes. Some children are sensitive to disposables and cloth helps prevent or heal rashes due to this sensitivity.
Most cloth diapers have elastic on the back and even the ones that don’t you are still able to get a tight fit. This elastic is a huge help in preventing blowouts. I have never experienced one of those up the back blowouts you see while I was using cloth. I unfortunately have when my son was in disposables. I say unfortunately because omg what a MESS that was!
One of the most obvious is that less diapers end up in landfills where they emit methane. Now with this one you do have to consider where you live, and how environmentally friendly cloth diapering is. We haven’t seen an increase in our electric bill and no change to our water since we have a well.
Many brands of disposable diapers contain dioxin, dyes, fragrances, sodium polyacrylate, TBT and other chemicals. More and more companies are taking steps to reduce these chemicals and offering safer options for your baby and the environment.
Last but definitely not least is how adorable they are! I never need a diaper cover and have tons of cute prints and solids to pick from for any occasion!

My daughter is potty trained now. I never did take the plunge with cloth diapering, but can appreciate why it is a good option. Especially that it keeps diapers out of land fills. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for this informative post. I think with my second i’ll consider cloth diapers. I can’t believe how much disposables add up overtime. They sure are expensive.
